Canada’s ruling Conservative party is being accused of using tax-payer money to fund pro-government propaganda. The government’s been spending big money on advertising its so-called Economic Action Plan. The multi-million dollar advertising campaign comes despite sweeping cuts to public programs.
Government advertisements like this are well known to Canadians. However what is unknown to many is that the government overspent on its cabinet approved ad budget by a whopping $128 million, much of which went to promote its so called Economic Action Plan.
Adding insult to injury the government has spent much of this tax payer money on such ads in recent months even though the government themselves declared their Economic Action Plan over back in March.
Analysts say that in effect the Harper government is telling the Canadian people that there should be cuts to healthcare, childcare and education but that it is ok for the government to spend millions of tax dollars on advertisements for a government initiative that no longer exits.
The Harper government maintains that the tax-payer funded messaging is necessary so the public are aware of their opportunities. But critics demand tangible economic change in Canada rather than embellished statements such as those contained on the Economic Action Plan website.
Critics say that the Harper government’s Economic Action Plan more or less begins and ends with the costly advertisements. Such critics note that the Harper government is ideologically averse to genuine New Deal-style economic recovery programs that might actually improve the lives of working class Canadians.
